Brazil join sport´s biggest chokers

Brazil s 7-1 humbling at the hands of Germany in the FIFA World Cup semi-final is a source of deep embarrassment for the hosts.

However, football fans in the country can take solace from the fact that they are not the first and will not be the last to suffer heartbreaking capitulation in the sporting arena.

Jana Novotna Wimbledon, 1993

Czech Novotna had one hand on what would have been her first Wimbledon crown when she went 4–1 up and 40-30 ahead in the deciding set against Steffi Graf in the 1993 final.

What followed led to one of sport s greatest collapses, as Novotna double faulted and then Graf reeled off the final five games to clinch the win although Novotna did eventually make up for her disappointment when she won the grand slam five years lat…

Former Leicester boss Ranieri makes Cagliari return

Claudio Ranieri has been unveiled as the new coach of Cagliari, with the former Leicester City manager returning to his former club for a second stint.

The 71-year-old was previously in charge of the Serie B side between 1988 and 1991, guiding them from the third to the first tier with consecutive promotions.

Ranieri, who was dismissed by Watford in January after just three months in charge, reunites with his old team three decades after his previous spell, with the team down in the bottom half of the second tier.

He succeeds Fabio Liverani, who was sacked following a 2-1 defeat to Palermo last week, and will take charge on January 1 on a contract that runs to June 2025.

Cagliari is pleased to announce it has reached an agreement with Claudio Ranieri who…

Rashford dropped from England squad as Guehi receives first call-up

Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford has been dropped from Gareth Southgate s England squad, while Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi has been handed his first senior call-up.

Fellow Red Devils attacker Jadon Sancho has also been omitted from the 25-man squad, having also been left out of Southgate s last party in November 2021.

Rashford has endured an underwhelming season at Old Trafford, registering a paltry four goals and two assists in 19 Premier League appearances as his team fights for a top-four finish.

The 24-year-old s frustrating campaign has led to suggestions he could leave Old Trafford, and he described himself as upset and disappointed after being heckled by his own fans following Tuesday s Champions League defeat to Atletico Madrid.

Coupe de France Preview: Guingamp v Monaco

Monaco coach Claudio Ranieri accepts the pressure will be on his side as they visit Guingamp in Wednesday s Coupe de France semi-final.

Ranieri s side are the favourites to win France s oldest domestic competition for a sixth time following a campaign that has seen them challenge Paris Saint-Germain for the Ligue 1 title in their first season back in the top flight.

Monaco, who won Ligue 2 last term, spent big in the close-season to bring in stars such as Radamel Falcao, James Rodriguez and Joao Moutinho, however, their quest to win the French league crown appears set to fall short.

They trail PSG by 10 points with five games remaining, yet can still end the campaign on a high by securing glory in the Coupe de France.

Monaco last won the tournament back in 1991, …

Mason Mount aware Man Utd must improve after stuttering start to the season

Manchester United midfielder Mason Mount admits his side need a clear improvement after suffering their worst start to a Premier League season.

Not since the 1989-90 campaign, when Sir Alex Ferguson was reportedly one game away from the sack, have United lost four of their first seven league fixtures.

But Joachim Andersen’s first-half goal for Palace inflicted the same fate on the current crop, which left the Old Trafford faithful booing at the end.

Mount, who made his Premier League return after six weeks out with injury, says United must get better.

“We know we need to win these games and it’s been a difficult start,” the England international told the club’s website.

“As soon as they got the goal, they defended really well, they got…

Donnarumma played spectacularly, denying Juventus a couple of clear cut chances. / Image via goal.com

It was a controversial ending to an otherwise thrilling match. was awarded a penalty in the dying moments of the match for a handball that may or may not have been intentional. Anyway, they fully deserved the win. Here are five things we learned from the encounter.

5. Stats Can be Misleading

Juventus utterly dominated the game, but they were unable to finish when they were given the chance. They outshot the Rossoneri 24 to 6, but the scoreline would have been even had it not been for the last minute penalty awarded to them. Milan have proven that they can compete with the best even with a mediocre team at best. Juve s home streak of 30 wins looked in doubt for the fin…

Hull City v Stoke City: Visitors keen to spoil party

Stoke City boss Mark Hughes will hope his side can spoil the party mood at the KC Stadium when they battle Hull City on Sunday.

Hull s first ever European campaign has generated a feel-good factor in east Yorkshire and Steve Bruce s men started the Premier League season with a 1-0 win at QPR last week.

A much-changed side did lose 1-0 to Lokeren in the first leg of their UEFA Europa League play-off on Thursday but Hull will still be hopeful of progression with the home leg to come.

Stoke suffered a 1-0 loss to Aston Villa at the Britannia Stadium on Saturday but have had the entire week to prepare for their trip to Hull, and Hughes thinks being the visitors on this occasion will help them.

Playing away from home may possibly may play into our hands a lit…

Club World Cup: Maverick Quintero gets another chance on the big stage

The Colombian playmaker drew back his left foot outside the penalty area and smashed home a spectacular goal via the underside of the crossbar.

It was a moment to illuminate a South American argument that fans will never forget, one to elevate a player already known in Europe but now on the cusp of superstar status.

As the Monaco-based but Real Madrid-bound James Rodriguez slayed Uruguay at the 2014 World Cup, his replacement at Porto, Juan Fernando Quintero, sat unused on the bench.

Over the next four years, James and his compatriot, two years his junior, would take their mercurial talents in sharply contrasting directions.

But following another remarkable goal (outside the box, left foot, in off the bar – you know the kind) to settle the mother of all…
